‘Spirit to Play’ - The Greensand Country's Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Community / by Shaun Armstrong

An artistic response project in association with Full House Theatre Company

These images represent my curation of a project I undertook for Full House Theatre Company, alongside my documenting of their creative outreach activities to young people in the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities in ‘Greensand County’, Bedfordshire during 2024 and 2025 (see detail at end of gallery).

This curation is entitled Spirit to Play. It celebrates the free, playful, engaging and family-orientated community I found so apparent in the young people over the course of this commission, of which a selection is featured in a touring exhibition of the artwork they created.

Since the Summer 2024, Full House Theatre has been working alongside children and young people on a project focussed on the stories and identities of families living on Gypsy, Roma and Traveller sites in Greensand Country. Full House have been regularly visiting three sites collaborating with the community on a range of creative activities that explore culture, place and heritage. In June, as part of GRT History month Full House creative practitioners will be visiting local schools and taking the young people’s work on tour, with a co-curated exhibition in local libraries called ‘Travelling Through Greensand’.
